Full & final report of the September 25 agitation by the AIKS in Maharashtra against the three farm bills

 MAHARASHTRA, SEPTEMBER 25: AIKS MOBILISES 35,000 PEASANTS IN 23 DISTRICTS IN RASTA ROKO ACTIONS, MAKES BONFIRE OF MODI GOVT'S AGRI BILLS

 

On September 25, 35,360 peasants at 83 centres in 23 districts of Maharashtra, led by the AIKS, responded to the AIKSCC’s nationwide call, blocked national and state highways in Maharashtra and held demonstrations in which they burnt copies of the three anti-farmer and pro-corporate agricultural bills of the Modi-led BJP government. In some districts, they included a large number of women and youth led by AIDWA and DYFI. These were the largest mass actions in Maharashtra ever since the lockdown began six months ago.

 

The districts with the largest participation were as follows: Thane-Palghar – 15,500 in 18 centres; Nashik – 12,800 in 4 centres; Nanded – 1,800 in 9 centres; Ahmednagar – 1,500 in 1 centre; Yavatmal – 840 in 5 centres; and Beed – 550 in 5 centres.  

 

There were massive Rasta Roko actions in Thane-Palghar, Nashik and Ahmednagar districts, in which a total of over 25,000 peasants participated in strength. 

 

In Palghar district, over 8,000 peasants blocked the Mumbai-Delhi National Highway at Charoti in Dahanu tehsil, and 1,000 more blocked the same highway at Boisar Naka in Palghar tehsil. In Beed district, over 300 peasants blocked the Mumbai-Vishakhapatnam National Highway at three places in Majalgaon tehsil – Mothewadi, Talkhed and Nitrud.  

 

At several other places state highways were blocked by peasants. This happened in Dindori (6,000), Chandwad (2,500), Kalwan (2,000) in Nashik district; Vikramgad (2,500), Jawhar (1,500), Wada (700) in Palghar district; and Akole (1,500) in Ahmednagar district.  

 

Other districts where good AIKS actions took place were Solapur, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Pune in Western Maharashtra region; Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Yavatmal, Buldana in Vidarbha region; Nanded, Beed, Parbhani, Jalna, Aurangabad, Hingoli, Latur, Usmanabad in Marathwada region; and Nandurbar in North Maharashtra region.

 

Solidarity actions by CITU, DYFI and AIDWA were held in four centres in Mumbai and they mobilized around 300 people. 

 

In a few places like Akole, Vikramgad, Kolhapur and Sangli, workers of Left parties like CPI, PWP and LNP, and secular parties like NCP, Congress, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and Rashtra Seva Dal also took part in joint protests. Some Shiv Sena activists also took part in Akole.   

 

Apart from the AIKS, other constituent organizations of the AIKSCC, like the CPI-led Kisan Sabha, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, National Alliance of People’s Movements, Lok Sangharsh Morcha and others also held protests in several places in Maharashtra.

 

These mass actions were led in various places by AIKS national president Dr Ashok Dhawale, former state president J P Gavit, ex-MLA, CITU state secretary Vinod Nikole, MLA, AIKS state president Kisan Gujar, AIKS state general secretary Dr Ajit Nawale, AIKS state office bearers Arjun Ade, Umesh Deshmukh, Barkya Mangat, Ratan Budhar, Radka Kalangda, Sunil Malusare, Savliram Pawar, Uday Narkar, Shankarrao Danav, Sidhappa Kalshetty, Shankar Sidam, Uddhav Poul, Manik Avaghade and Yashwant Zade. CITU, AIAWU, AIDWA, DYFI and SFI leaders also participated in some places.

 

These actions received good publicity in both mainstream media and also on social media.
